Wedding blessing herbs are becoming more and more popular as brides look for unique ways to implement tradition and history into a modern era. In the Victorian era, herbs were thrown as blessings to the happy couple in the same way that rice or confetti is thrown today. As the couple left the church, guests would throw herbs in honor of their new union.
Today herbs are being chosen as they are inexpensive and eco-friendly. Many venues or ceremony sites will not allow rice and even sometimes confetti to be thrown so herbs are a wonderful and romantic alternative.
In the Victorian tradition, herbal sachets would be given to the guests that combined a mix of flower petals and herbs, and each herb symbolized a blessing for the couple.
Roses were symbolic of undying love, Lavender was used for devotion, Rosemary for remembrance, Larkspur for levity, Chamomile for patience in adverse times, and Jasmine symbolized confidence.
Today you can find creative ways to use your herbal blessings, sprinkle them on table tops and add a pinch into your wedding invitations.
Give the guests a sachet as they go into the church with a little note on what each herb symbolizes and they can bestow these blessings on you as you leave the church with your new spouse.
